What is FTMO and Why is it the Standard?
FTMO is not just a proprietary trading firm; it is the industry benchmark. Their Challenge, the two-step evaluation process, has become the gold standard for testing a trader's discipline and profitability. If you manage to pass the rigorous FTMO evaluation, you will have demonstrated that you possess the necessary skills to manage institutional capital.
The Heart of the Challenge: Risk Parameters
The Challenge is based on strict risk management. Understanding and respecting the loss limits is more important than reaching the profit target. Violation of either of the two *drawdown* rules results in immediate disqualification.

Maximum Daily Loss (Max Daily Loss)
10%
Maximum Total Loss (Max Loss)
The Importance of the "Maximum Daily Loss" (5%)
This is the most critical rule. It is calculated from the initial balance or equity at the start of the trading day (00:00 server time). If at any point your account equity or balance drops 5% below the initial daily balance, the evaluation ends. This forces traders to be extremely cautious with their position size and avoid overexposure in a single day.
Consistency and Trader Psychology
The Consistency Rule (A Note on Flexibility)
FTMO's former Consistency Rule was designed to prevent traders from passing the challenge with a single high-risk trade (or a "lucky hit"). Although this rule was eliminated for new Challenges and FTMO Accounts starting in 2023, its spirit remains: FTMO looks for traders who operate with a repeatable system, not gamblers.
Important Update: The strict Consistency Rule has been ELIMINATED. This makes the Challenge easier, but risk management discipline remains key to long-term success.
Performance Monitoring
One of FTMO's biggest advantages is its Client Area, which provides comprehensive, real-time analysis of your performance. It uses the Mentor Account, a proprietary tool, to evaluate your metrics, such as average lot size, most traded instruments, and most profitable hours. This feedback is invaluable for refining your strategy.
The Scaling Plan: Recurring Growth
Once funded, the goal is to grow with the firm. FTMO offers one of the clearest and most lucrative scaling plans in the industry.
Requirements for the Scaling Plan:
- Having generated a net profit of at least 10% (or 20% in the case of the Aggressive account) in the last 4 months.
- Having executed at least 2 profitable trading months within that 4-month period.
- Having processed at least two profit withdrawals.
If you meet these requirements, FTMO increases your FTMO Account balance by 25% of the initial capital. This allows you to manage up to $2,000,000 USD over time, while always maintaining the profit split in your favor, which can scale from an initial 80/20 up to 90/10 at the highest levels.
Pros and Cons: Is FTMO Right for You?
Pros
- 🏆 Leadership and Trust: The longest and most reliable payment history. Technical or withdrawal issues are rare.
- 📈 Scaling Potential: A clear growth plan that can lead you to manage $2M USD.
- 🧠 Valuable Tools: The *Mentor Application* and *Trader Analysis* are essential for professional self-evaluation.
- 🔄 Refund: The Challenge fee is an investment, as it is fully refunded with your first withdrawal.
Cons
- ❌ 5% Daily Rule: The 5% Maximum Daily Loss limit is a pressure factor for traders who operate high-volatility systems.
- ⏱️ Time Limit: Although they offer a *Free Repeat* if you are close to the target, the 30 and 60-day limits are not ideal for slow or long-term systems.
- 💰 High Initial Cost: The entry fee is higher than many newer competitors.
⭐ Verdict: Is FTMO Right For You?
FTMO is ideal for the trader who has already found their profitability and discipline. If your trading system can keep the daily and total *drawdown* risk under control, FTMO offers you the platform, the capital, and the tools to become an elite fund manager.
